Pay yourself 10% of your income for a rainy day - to be ready to weather any storm.

One of the best pieces of financial advice I’ve received was from my grandfather.

He was a very happy and positive man who loved his life, family and music. He played many musical instruments and loved telling ghosts stories.

I loved visiting my grandparents in their Surry Hills terrace home but got more than a ghost story one day.

I was 14 years old and my grandfather told me: ‘when you get paid, before you do anything else, always pay yourself 10 per cent of your income and put it away for a rainy day. That way you will have some money to get through the storm that will inevitably come. Also before you purchase anything, always ask yourself two questions: do you need it? or do you just want it?’

The advice was critical for me in achieving my financial goals.

Now I am the branch principal of Yellow Brick Road Fairfield based in a busy area of Western Sydney and I still haven’t forgotten that advice.

These valuable financial principles I share regularly with both my family and clients.

Regardless of the level of income you receive, if you stick to this advice it will serve you well to assist in achieving your financial goals.
